The Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition to be Held in Shenzhen in July
1. Preface on the International Wulin Tea Competition
Tea as a drink, was made known by Shen Nong, and prospered by Lu Yu, passed onto Japan, dispersed into Europe and America, it’s the treasure of China, and it has been transmissed from one generation to the next.
The Chinese tea drinking has a long history. In Tang dynasty, people brewing tea in a pot, in Song dynasty, people created a new tea brewing method called Dian Cha, in Ming dynasty, people were brewing tea leaves and no longer tea powder, in each dynasty, the tea brewing methods changed or adapted according to people’s life styles and as a result, new tea brewing methods immerged from time to time. Hang Zhou, as the tea capital in China, has been organizing the International Wulin Tea Competition since 5 years ago, inviting tea lovers and tea professionals to meet together, to also compete with each other, and thus foster creativity and a deeper love for tea among competition and friendship, which itself quite original and creative in China.
Meeting in July, the organizer the International Wulin Tea Competition is coming to Shenzhen again as the second time, tea professionals meet together to collaborate and develop the tea industry together. Brewing tea, and competing tea quality, appreciating tea and serving tea, all kinds of methods and techniques are demonstrated among various types of competitions. Once becoming the winner, then will be known and admired, but didn’t, friendship and experiences are gained. Kong Zi has said:“Harmony while remaining distinct.” It’s the organizer’s goal to gather all tea professionals of different specialties together, promoting the tea culture and arts, once this goal is being accomplished, then nothing else is desired.

In order to further promote the development of the tea industry, to further popularize the tea culture and arts, and to foster an elegant and enjoyful tea drinking fashion, arousing people’s deeper interest in tea brewing skills, and abilities in evaluating tea qualities, to strengthen the interactive exchanges among professionals in both the tea and the tea brewing water industries, we are organizing the 6th International Wulin tea Competition from the 2nd to 3rd July, 2016 during the 12th China (Shenzhen) International Tea Industry Exhibition which is to be held from the 30th July to 3rd July,2016.
We invite domestic and international well known tea experts as well as referees to be the judges for our Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition in which top quality teas and also top tea experts from all corners of the world are going to meet and compete with together on tea brewing skills and tea evaluation skills etc, as so to allow them to exchange and learn with each other, to contribute to the advancement and the development of the international tea culture and tea industries.

2. Rules on competition and evaluation criteria:
(1) Tea Brewing Skills Competition (International Wulin Tea Competition Traditional Program: Tea Brewing Skills Competition)
The same tea, the same quality tea brewing water, the same tea utensils, any units or individuals who are able to brew tea are welcomed to participate into this competition.
The competition-use tea is the Hangzhou Jiu Qu Red Tea, contestants are invited to brew tea at the same time, and brew each tea three times, each time serve 3 cups to referees, total serve 9 cups, performance is being evaluated 3 times.
Winners, who won the preliminary round, are entitled to participate in the semi-final then final. Will finally emerge one first prize winner (gold medal 15 g), two second prize winners (Silver Medals 20 grams), three third prize winners (Medal of Honor), and will be granted with "Sixth international Wulin Tea Competition Honor Certificate” and some tea rewards.
l The first prize winner will be awarded with "Gold Tea Sommelier" medals (15 grams of pure gold), and be granted with "Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Committee First Winner Tea Sommelier" certificate.

Second prize winners will be awarded with “Silver Tea Sommelier" medals (15 grams of pure gold), and be granted with "Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Committee Second Winner Tea Sommelier" certificate.
l Third place winners will be awarded with “Excellent Tea Sommelier" medals and be granted with "Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Committee Tea Sommelier" certificate.
All prize winners will be awarded with sponsor bonus tea gifts.
Contestants, without winning any prize, will be granted with “Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Tea Ambassador Honor certificate”.
The ratings will be based on tea color, tea fragrance, and tea taste. Ratings of 3 servings will be added then divided by 3. Then adding the average points of each referee, then divide by 3, the one with highest point will be the winner.
In tea brewing competition, only tea color, tea fragrance, and tea taste is being evaluated, regardless of contestants’ costumes, tea utensils, and brewing gestures. Tea taste is 50 points, and tea fragrance is 30 points, tea color is 20 points.
(2) Tea Quality Competition ( International Wulin Tea Competition Traditional Program: Tea Quality Competition)
Contestant unities should send 500 gram tea samples to the address of the International Wulin Tea Competition Committee: Room 502, 3rd Floor, Chang Di Huo Ju Building, No. 259 Wen San Road, Xihu District, Hangzhou. Attn: Hu Xu Ying 13735437860, Cheng Xiao Hong 13867457034
All tea samples sent to the Committee won’t be returned, unless it has failed to pass the Committee’s evaluations, then it will be returned to senders at senders’ own charge. During the tea quality competition, the Committee will then distribute 50gram of each contestant unity’s tea samples for competition use.
For contestants whose tea samples have passed the Committee’s evaluation but failed to win prizes in the competition, will still be granted with “Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Committee Competition Tea”Certificate.
Following teas enter into the tea quality competition, they include: Raw Puer, Red Tea, Oolong Tea, White Tea, Black tea (Fu brick, Liu Bao Tea, Tibet Tea, Qing Brick etc.), Green Tea.
All contestants will use the same tea brewing utensils, the same brewing water, and brew each tea 3 times, each brew serve 3 cups to referees, total serving 9 cups of teas. Performance will be evaluated 3 times, the highest point in overall results will be the winner. The evaluation will be totally based on tea quality, without judging the tea leaves.
Qualified contestants may then participate into the semi-final and the final competition. 6 first place winners will be awarded with a medal(pure gold medal 15gram), 12 second place winners will be awarded with a silver medal( pure silver medal 20gram), and 18 third place winners be granted with “Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Committee Honor Certificate “and with some tea rewards.
Evaluations will be only based on tea color, tea fragrance, and tea taste. Adding points of the 3 brewings then divided by 3 is then the contestant’s final point. Then adding referees’ points together, then divide by 3 is the contestant’s final point. The highest point will be the winner.
In tea quality competition, the person who compete will have to brew his/her competition tea, and only tea color, tea fragrance, and tea taste is being evaluated, regardless of contestants’ costumes, tea utensils, and brewing gestures, dry tea and wet tea leaves are not judged neither. Tea taste is 50 points, and tea fragrance is 30 points, tea color is 20 points.
I. Green Tea Group:
Will generate 1 first place winner, 2 second place winners and 3 third place winners.
l 1 first place winner will be awarded a gold medal (15 gram pure gold) and "Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Green Tea Gold Medal Certificate”.
l 2 second place winners will be awarded a silver medal and "Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Green Tea Silver Medal certificate”.
l 3 third place winners will be awarded "Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Outstanding Green Tea Certificate".
All winners will also receive some sponsor tea rewards.
II.Black Tea Group:
Will generate 1 first place winner, 2 second place winners and 3 third place winners.

(3) Tea quality judging capability competition ( Judging tea brewing quality)
Four different tea brewing will be prepared, they include raw puer tea, red tea(Dian Hong), oolong tea(Single Cluster / Dan Cong), and green tea(Long Jing). The chief referee will decide by drawing which type of tea brewing will be judged by all contestants. Then 5 different tea brewing of the chosen tea in 5 tea bowls will be tasted by contestants, contestants will have to put them in sequence according to tea qualities judged by themselves. All contestants go through the initial competition and then those who qualified will enter into the final competition.
This competition will generate 1 first place winner, 2 second place winners and 3 third place winners, if their results are tied, the referee will then pose an instant question for contestants to answer, and the one comes out with a correct answer wins.
In this competition, we will reward 1 first place winner( 15 gram pure gold medal), 2 second place winner( 20 gram silver medal), 3 third place winner ( honor medal), and all winners will be granted “Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Excellency Honor Certificate “as well as some tea reward.
l The first place winner will be awarded a Tea Judging gold medal (15 gram pure gold) and "Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Tea Judging Gold Medal Certificate".
l The second place winners will be awarded a Tea Judging silver medal and "Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Tea Judging Silver Medal certificate”.
l The third place winners will be awarded a Tea Judging medal and "Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Tea Judging Third Place Winner Certificate".
All winners will also receive various sponsor tea rewards.
(4) Tea Brewing and Dry Tea Pairing Competition
Contestants look and smell 10 dry tea samples, then, must do the pairings after tasting their tea soups.
After elimination, winners will enter into final competition, and 6 winners will be awarded, including 1 first place winner (15gram pure gold medal), 2 second place winners (20 gram pure silver medal) and 3 third place winners ( honor medal), and all winners will be granted with “ Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Excellency Honor Certificate” and some tea rewards.
l The first place winner will be awarded a Tea Pairing gold medal (15 gram pure gold) and "Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Tea Pairing Gold Medal Certificate".
l The second place winners will be awarded a Tea Pairing silver medal and "Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Tea Pairing Silver Medal certificate”.
l The third place winners will be awarded a Tea Pairing medal and "Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Tea Pairing Third Place Winner Certificate".
All winners will also receive various sponsor tea rewards.
(5) Song Dynasty Tea Ceremony Competition
The Song Dynasty Tea Ceremony Competition is a competition among individual contestants, (contestants could arrange assistant tea brewer or assistant performer be involved in competition), it’s requested that contestants prepare Song dynasty style costumes, tea utensils and tea table and set up the ambiance themselves. The tea table setting has to be artistic and of aesthetic taste, the tea ceremony performance has to be smooth, and of rich cultural expressions, they both should express the rich and artistic cultural beauty in the Song tea ceremony. (This competition could omit the tea baking, tea grinding steps etc in order to highlight the etiquette, language expression, and the main theme designed by contestant in the Song tea ceremony)
Judging Standards:
l Tea ceremony performance and the cultural ambiance is in consistency with the Song dynasty: 20 points
l Tea utensils and logical table settings, a harmonious and artistic color combination: 10 points
l Personal image, gestures, rituals in consistency with the Song dynasty: 20 points
l Skillful and smooth tea ceremony performance: 10 points
l Artistic tea table design, correct theme, complete and rhythmic performance 15 points
l Tea soup quality: 15 points
l Expressions match movement, tones, and intonations, volume, and rhythm, a general harmonious combination as a whole: 10 points
Referees mark points directly based on the contestant’s performance, delete the highest point and the lowest point, then get an average point from other referees’ marks. A total of 6 contestants will be rewarded.
l The highest point will be the winner who would be awarded a gold medal( 15gram pure gold), and also “Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Song Dynasty Tea Ceremony Gold Medal Certificate”.
l The second and the third place winners will be awarded a silver medal (pure silver), and also “Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Song Dynasty Tea Ceremony Runner-up Silver Medal Certificate”.
l The fourth, fifth and sixth place winners will be awarded with Excellency Medal, and also “Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Song Dynasty Tea Ceremony Third Place Winner Certificate.
l Contestants who have participated into the contest but did not win any place will be granted with “Sixth Internationl Wulin Tea Competiton Song Dynasty Tea Ceremony Ambassador Certificate”
All winners will also be rewarded with sponsor tea rewards.
(6) Tea Brewing Water Competition
Different types of tea brewing use water from different unities, using the same tea, the same tea utensil, as long as you have your own quality tea brewing use water and you know how to brew, you are welcomed to participate into this competition. Contestants shall send minimum 16kg water sample to the following address, no later than the 15th June, 2016.
Meanwhile, contestants shall mail supporting documentations to International Wulin Tea Competition Committee Office Address, including sealed copies of business license, product hygiene license, water quality test report ( documents issued by national authorities certifying that the water has met requirement of national drinking water standards), and all documents should be chopped as well. Note: Enterprise contestant must arrange your own player to brew tea with your water during the competition.
Three kinds of competition tea will need to be utilized, including non-fermented tea: West Lake Longjing Tea, Semi-fermented tea: Wuyi Yan Tea, and fermented tea: Dianhong Red Tea. Contestants shall brew 3 rounds of each tea, and serve 3 cups in each round to referees.
Water quality competition includes judging water quality at normal temperature, and at heated tempreture, referees shall give points based on the qualities.
This water quality competition, will generate 1 first place winner (15gram pure gold medal), 2 second place winners (20gram pure silver medals) and 3 third place winners (honor medals) and all winners will be granted “Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Excellency Honor Certificate” and some tea rewards.
l First place winner will be awarded a tea use brewing water gold medal (15 gram pure gold) and "Sixth International Wulin Tea Brewing Use Water Gold Medal Certificate".
l Second place winners will be awarded a tea brewing use water silver medal and "Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Tea Brewing Use Water Silver Medal certificate.”
l Third place winners will be awarded Excellent Tea Brewing Use Water medal, and "Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Excellent Tea Brewing Use Water Certificate".
All winners will also receive various sponsor tea rewards.
For those who participated into this competition but did not win any reward could be granted “Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition Tea Brewing Water Honor Certificate”.
All results will be added from referees and then divided by the number of referees, contestant with the highest point will be the winner.

6. The Implementation of the Rules of the General Committee
A. Rules of the Competition Venue
I. All contestants should be at least eighteen years of age.
II. Each contestant can only participate in up two competition items and plus the Song Dynasty Tea ceremony competition. Contestants are not allowed to enrol the Tea Brewing Skills Competition and the Tea Quality Competition at the same time.
III. The contestant shall wear his/her player card throughout the competition.
IV. It’s recommended that contestants wear tea suits or nationality costumes.
V. Contestants shall participate into the competitions in accordance with the rules and regulations by the General Committee.
VI. This competition is a grand tea even for both Chinese and International tea lovers and tea professionals, the goal is to promote exchanges, to learn from each other for improvement, all contestants should understand this spirit of the General Committee and try best to promote this spirit and to help and support the General Committee to constantly improving the quality of this competition.
B. Referees Conduct Code
I. Adheres to an open, fair and impartial judgment standard, no favoritism.
II. All referees must work in strict accordance with the requirements of the competition rules and abide by the scoring criteria for marking the points of each contestant; each of the elements should be carefully double checked and confirmed.
III. All division referees are responsible for their specific division, accomplish their corresponding work, and obey the orders from the chief judge.
IV. Each group referee is in charge of his/her group and its sub-divisions.
V. During the course of the whole competition, supervise all contestants and make sure they perform in security according to security operating procedures.
VI. Experts and judges should work together to maintain the Committee's image and honor, and constantly improve the quality of the competition.
C. Staff Conduct Code
I. Adhere to its job responsibilities and obey the directions by the Chief Referee.
II. Civilized behaviors, friendly and proactive working attitude and enthusiastic service.
III. Must wear his/her work permit throughout the competition.
The jury of the Sixth International Wulin Tea Competition will be composed by experts and also the referees.
